Statement
Accessibility
This site should work for everyone who needs it, including people using screen readers, keyboards, magnification, or reduced motion. Where it doesn't yet, I want to know.
Last reviewed: September 20, 2026. Automated and keyboard testing done; screen reader testing still outstanding. No certified compliance or completed audit is claimed. Known limitations below are updated as they are found and fixed.
The target
The site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA. That's the target I test against, not a certification. Text contrast, keyboard access, visible focus, meaningful alt text, and readable reflow at small widths are checked on every page before it's published.
What's been done
- Decorative images (pressed flowers, tape, pins) carry empty alt text so they're skipped by screen readers.
- Informative images and sample documents have alt text and a text equivalent alongside them.
- Every control can be reached and operated with a keyboard, including the Snapshot, and every focused element shows a visible focus ring.
- A "skip to main content" link is the first thing a keyboard reaches on every page.
- Nothing autoplays. Video on the Builds pages plays only when you press play.
- Pages reflow to a 320px-wide screen with no horizontal scrolling.
- Decorative artwork is checked automatically so that it never covers text, at seven screen widths across every route.
How it was tested
Last pass: 20 September 2026. Automated checks with axe-core against WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 at levels A and AA, on eight representative pages — home, contact, the Snapshot, a service page, a Field Note, Field Guides, and these two policy pages.
Alongside that: a keyboard-only pass through the Contact page and its form, a reflow check at 320px, and contrast maths on the brand colours. One real contrast failure was found on the "Book a call" button and has been fixed.
Screen reader testing has not been done yet. Automated tools catch perhaps a third to a half of real accessibility problems — they can tell you alt text is missing, but not whether it is useful, and they cannot tell you whether a page makes sense read aloud. Until that pass happens, this statement claims only what has actually been checked.
Known limitations
Listed as found. Each one stays here until it's fixed.
- Text does not respond to your browser’s default font size. Type on this site is set in fixed pixels, so raising the default text size in your browser settings will not change it. Browser zoom does work, and the layout reflows properly when you use it — but if you rely on a larger default font rather than zoom, this site will not follow you. On the list to fix.
- The scheduling calendar is third-party. The Contact page embeds Calendly, whose accessibility I do not control and cannot correct. If it does not work for you, the same booking page opens in a new tab from the link beneath it, and email works just as well.
- Screen reader testing is outstanding. Until it is done, there may be problems here that no automated tool would have caught.
Third-party services
Some parts of this site are provided by other companies — the scheduling calendar, the form handling, embedded video. Their accessibility is theirs, I cannot modify it, and it may not meet the same standard as the rest of the site.
Where I use one, I try to make sure there is a way around it: the calendar has a plain link and an email address beside it, and the contact form is an ordinary HTML form. If a third-party component is blocking you, tell me and I will find another way to get you what you need.
Captions and transcripts
If you find a video on this site without captions, email hello@technical-humanist.com and tell me which one. I will get captions to you within five business days.
The same goes for a transcript, or for a text version of anything here that is hard to get at. Ask and I will make one.
Report a barrier
If something on this site doesn't work for you, email hello@technical-humanist.com with the page and what happened. Include the browser or assistive technology you were using if you can. I read every report and reply.
If you'd rather talk than type, the same address works to arrange a call.
This statement is about the website. If you are working with me and need something delivered differently — a different format, more time, another channel — ask. That is not a special accommodation, it is just how the work should fit you.
